Childs was already playing professionally while he earned a composition degree from University of Southern California in 1979. Since then, he has played solo and with several different ensembles around the world. He has played alongside Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, Kronos Quartet, Winton Marsalis, and Chris Botti to name a few.
