Frankie & Johnnie's Steakhouse 

A New York institution, in the heart of the Theater District just off Eighth Avenue on 45th Street, Frankie & Johnnie's opened as a speakeasy in 1926. It has been called the longest running show on Broadway and is one of New York City's oldest continual dining establishments. Today, Frankie & Johnnie's Steakhouse continues its intimate, hideaway aura and classic New York ambience. It is a classic steakhouse where generous portions of forthright food and expert service are always the order of the day.

Legend has it that to gain access to the original speakeasy patrons knocked on the unmarked door and used the password 'Frankie' when a small peephole was opened. If it was business as usual, a confirmation reply of 'Johnnie' was heard and admittance was gained. Hence, the Frankie and Johnnie's moniker, which became synonymous with good food and drink in a convivial, unpretentious setting, was born. The restaurant became a favorite haunt of the stars of stage and screen whose autographed pictures are its principle decoration.

Climbing a narrow, winding black-and-white tiled stairway behind the solid red door at street-level leads to a tiny vestibule, where diners are welcomed by Mr. Peter Chimos (proprietor) or one of his veteran waiters. Diners get a glimpse into the galley of a kitchen where flames leap as steaks sizzle. To the left, a cozy saloon-like bar beckons, to the right the intimate dining room. A stage-set version of the New York restaurants that defined 'class' for generations, it is a refreshing oasis on the New York restaurant landscape of large, loud, high-tech eateries. Red-shaded chandeliers, red and white draped tables, wood-blind accented windows overlooking the Theatre District streetscape, leather banquets and autographed celebrity photographs complete the room's decor.
