New York Artist Jenny Ping Creates Colorful Ballet in Williamsburg
 "Aria of Sun Spring Rays" (2007)  "Four Braided Dansaurs" (2004-2005)
Working in marker, pen, pencil, and colored pencil, Ping creates elaborately costumed ballet dancers and opera singers, often with reptilian heads, captured in the midst of performing yet shown alone, against a white background. When seen together, it is almost as if they are performing their own imaginary silent ballet, using the wall as the stage, with music and choreography from such Ping influences as Tchaikovsky, Marius Petipa, Stravinsky, Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, Prokofiev, and others.
The exhibition also includes several larger pieces with multiple characters, combining Ping’s cartoonish dansaurs with fully human figures in such works as “Evening Flight” and “Waltz of the Grey Prince and Pink Doll.” As funny and engaging as the heads are, Ping’s deft touch is most evident in the costumes, which contain complex patterns and color schemes and help bring to life these captivating characters.
