Margaret Mead Film & Video FestivalNov. 9-11, 2007 ![]() "Sleepwalking Through the Mekong" will kick off the Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival tonight The opening night film selection appropriately encapsulates the mood of the series. "Sleepwalking Through the Mekong," is a documentary about a Cambodian pop band, "Dengue Fever," who's influences include surfer rock, R&B, elements of Bollywood, Ethiopian Jazz, and of course Cambodian Pop. Although a California-based band, the group travels to Cambodia, the homeland of lead singer Ch'hom Nimoi. The film captures their often humorous and sentimental exploits and culminates in a show that the band plays in a shantytown. A variety of topics will be covered that deal with emerging social and cultural trends such as user-generated Web content, disability and community struggles with sexual identity in Iran, reincarnated Tibetan lamas, the evironmental issues related to water and the digital revolution in China.
