The film captures one of the great acts of the '90s alternative rock movement at its peak. Always held in high esteem for the raw energy of its live performances, The Jesus Lizard's noisy mix of gut-churning industrial guitar histrionics and post-hardcore stops and starts were unlike anything heard before, especially when paired with the psychotically incoherent vocals of frontman David Yow. "The Jesus Lizard - Live" was recorded at the Venus De Milo in Boston in October '94, around the time of their 4th studio album "Down" (Touch & Go) and shortly before the band's signing with Capitol Records--and subsequent falling out with superstar engineer Steve Albini. The performance solidifies the band's reputation as the premier live band of the era. The four original members, Yow on vocals, Duane Denison on guitar, David Sims on bass, and drummer Mac McNeilly deliver a pummelling show. While the band locks in perfectly to the taut rhythms, Yow whips himself into a frenzy and leaps into the crowd, driving the audience wild with his contagiously unhinged abandon. Captured on two cameras and rendered in hi-fi audio, the DVD also features a bonus for New Yorkers: extra footage of the band performing 5 songs at the legendary (and now defunct) CBGB.
