Here's the kicker--the show is completely free! Having initially gained attention for their slow, Americana-tinged melancholy, The National have truly blossomed into full-fledged rock stars. Though their sound has remained rooted in the band's past, the expanding sonic textures, snazzy music videos, and focus on Matt Berninger's sultry baritone has brought a new legion of fans, including a horde of Berninger-obsessed indie girls, to the band. This is a band who seems on course for a long, succesful career--it surely won't be long before they become stadium-fillers like fellow New York indie exports Interpol. The Forms are a Brooklyn-based four piece who lean towards the slightly avant-garde, angular yet melodic sound of groups like Slint and The Dirty Projectors. Their 2003 album, "Icarus," produced by über-producer Steve Albini, got some rave reviews despite the deliberately obscure album packaging and songs that confusingly spanned multiple tracks. The short, EP-like album followed a similar structure to side two of the Beatles' "Abbey Road," with each song seamlessly melding into the next. Now, this October, The Forms will be releasing a self-titled follow up, also produced by Albini, on their own Threespheres label. All indications are that the new eponymous disc will be an improvement on their already-impressive debut effort. The lineup is rounded out by openers Takka Takka, also based in New York, making this an all-local lineup. Be sure to arrive early, as the insane crowds will prevent fashionable lateness. For fans of New York indie bands, or for those who like to see concerts in extremely picturesque settings, this is a show not to miss! |
