For one night only, on Friday March 9th, world-reknowned sitarist Anoushka Shankar will be performing in New York with the "Anoushka Shankar Project," showing off her virtuosity with classical Indian forms while incorporating elements of Western music. Outside of the traditional sitar-tabla-tanpura ensemble, Anoushka is rolling into town with musicians on Shahnai, Bansuri, kanjira, drum and bass.
Coming from an extremely musical heritage, being the daughter of the daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar, and half-sister to pop chanteuse Norah Jones, Ms. Shankar began playing and studying the sitar when she was nine years old and by the age of 13 she made her performing debut in New Delhi in 1994. That same year, she played on her father's recording, "In Celebration." Her most recent album, Rise, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Contemporary World Music category in 2005, and will be showcased in part for this upcoming concert. In addition, Ms. Shankar was the first Indian to perform at the Grammys.
