All proceeds go towards YAI/NIPD, a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive services for people with disabilities. A torch singer for the 21st century, singer/songwriter Celia Chavez creates music that fuses the cool, modern rhythm of Manhattan with the moody, earthy beauty of her native Seattle. Her set at The Cutting Room at 7 pm on June 19th celebrates the release of her debut full-length CD, "Sailor's Daughter." Chavez's songwriting uses a cinematic vocabulary and wit along with a melodic, harmonic and lyric sense reminiscent of a jazz standard, but spiced with hints of European cabaret, Latin rhythms, Americana , and old-school soul. While the songs' sentiments are romantic and the arrangements mostly minimal, her songs carry an intense contemporary timelessness - standards for a modern era, delivered in a vibrant, assertive new voice. Kiku Collins, found her way from a small northern NJ town to the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan after doing a 2 summer stint at their National Music Camp. From there, she went on to study classical performance at Manhattan School of Music. Her mentor, Mr. Mel Broiles, always encouraged her, as one of few female trumpet players trying to survive in a man's world. He always encouraged her to pursue her dreams, and his voice has echoed in her head every time she wanted to give up. She has been Beyonce' Knowles' trumpet player since June of 2006. "Here With Me", an instrumental album of Collins' original compositions featuring oodles of multitracking on the flugelhorn, muted trumpet and trombone, is available at www.cdbaby.com and iTunes, as well as many other places on the internet and on the shelves. Whether you hear Ms. Collins on the television or radio, with mega-pop stars or local NYC acts, one thing is crystal clear; her passion and love for life come through in her sound, her voice, her eyes, her soul.
