Cyrus Chestnut
No wonder Cyrus Chestnut sounds as if he were born to play piano-specifically, the melodic mix of jazz, classical, and gospel-tinged music that makes him one of jazz’s best and most important pianists.

Cyrus Chestnut began studying piano while he was still learning to walk. However, classical music and the music of the church were his first musical experiences. He didn’t discover jazz until he bought his first album, “Thelonious Monk’s Greatest Hits’ at nine years old.

At the prestigious Peabody conservatory, Chestnut studied classical music. that’s when what he calls the “tug” began- “Chopan vrs. Monk, Beethoven vrs. Bud Powell. Even thogh he says “they both won”, he ended up at Berklee School of Music to study jazz.

It wasn’t long before he was backing up Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Betty Carter. When you hear Chestnut at Iridium- you’ll hear all these diverse influences and his own style.
