 John Doe rocks the Avalon in 2005  Dead Rock West have been a blur of activity lately, with a new album out and the current tour with John Doe  John Doe's "A Year in the Wilderness" captures the personality of the former X frontman in a way that his previous solo records have not managed to do  Dead Rock West vocalists Frank Lee Drennen and Cindy Wasserman Few bands get the chance to ever go on tour with a true music legend, and even fewer get to share the stage with said legend. But rootsy-Los Angeles rock band Dead Rock West has just pulled off this impressive coup. John Doe, frontman of the seminal early '80s punk band X, has been an influential figure in rock music for over 20 years. After redefining the L.A. punk scene with the melodic blast of the landmark 1980 album "Los Angeles," X went on to incorporate elements of blues and country music into their unique sound. With the dual vocal attacks of Doe and frontwoman Exene Cervenka, X rapidly gained a reputation as one of the world's greatest live acts. Since launching his solo career in 1990 with "Meet John Doe," country, folk, and rockabilly have been the hallmarks of Doe's sound, but he's managed to never let go of that crucial punk energy. Doe is currently on the road to support his new album on Yep Roc, "A Year in the Wilderness." Hand-picked by Doe to open his current American jaunt, Dead Rock West will also be serving as his back up band for the duration of the tour. The timing couldn't be better for Dead Rock West, as the band is currently promoting their debut LP, "Honey and Salt," which is available now on Populuxe Records. Evoking bands like The Byrds, Wilco and later X, "Honey and Salt" is packed with lush harmonies, tight country-rock arrangements, and spot-on songwriting. Mixed by Grammy-winner Richard Dodd, the album is already charting well on college radio charts and making scores of devoted fans across the country. Dead Rock West frontwoman Cindy Wasserman has a long history with roots rock, having previously worked with artists such as Grant Lee Phillips, and can currently be heard on "The Salvation Blues," a new album by Mark Olson of The Jayhawks. Guitarist/lead vocalist Frank Lee Drennen has also spent time in a number of groups including Loam and Stewboss, and has worked with troubadour Gregory Page and Dave Sharp of The Alarm. The rest of the band is composed of crack musicians who have played with everybody from Rod Stewart to Jill Sobule. Any true fans of Americana/roots music would be foolish to miss this show. Doors at 9:00 pm. {mos_ri}
