Dialogues on FilmJuly 24, 2007 ![]() Filmmaker Jem Cohen ![]() IFC Center ![]() D.A. Pennebaker filming "Don't Look Back," a revolutionary documentary about Bob Dylan Both Jem Cohen and D.A. Pennebaker will be appearing as part of a series being done by IFC called "Dialogues on Film," a set of screenings and discussions presented by Filmmaker Magazine and the IFC Center. Turkish-born and NYC-based director Jem Cohen rose to prominence with his 10-year-in-the-making project entitled "Instrument" (1998), an experimental film on the independent punk band Fugazi. Cohen has also completed film projects with the Atlanta band Smoke, Elliott Smith, and R.E.M. Now on Tuesday, July 24th, he will screen his new film "Building a Broken Moustrap", a portrait of the Dutch band The Ex, with a special appearance by band member Matt Boyd. The August 1st event at IFC Center features one of the world's foremost music filmmakers in history; D.A. Pennebaker, director of several films such as the groundbreaking festival documentary "Monterey Pop" and David Bowie's era-ending 1973 concert film, "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars." Pennebaker, perhaps riding on the coatheels of Martin Scorcese's recent success with "No Direction Home," is revisiting archival footage from "Don't Look Back," his own definitive portrait of Bob Dylan circa 1965. "65 Revisited," cut from over 20 hours of unseen archival footage left over from the "Don't Look Back," focuses on the same UK tour as its predecessor, but greatly differs in style and attitude from the latter. Both events are planned to start at 7:30pm, Jem Cohen scheduled for Tuesday July 24th and D.A. Pennebaker scheduled for Wednesday, August 1st. Filmmaker Magazine Editor Scott Macaulay will be moderating the discussions. Tickets for each event are $8 for IFC Center members and $11 for General Admissions. {mos_ri}
