Iggy Pop & The Stooges April 9, 8:00 pm ![]() (L to R) Ron Asheton, Iggy Pop, Scott Asheton ![]() "The Weirdness" is the first Iggy And The Stooges album since "Raw Power" in 1973 ![]() Iggy will probably appear shirtless on stage--and the guy's nearly 60! While reviews of "The Weirdness" have been mixed, all indications are that their live set retains the celebrated punk energy that made them groundbreakers in the late '60s, rising out of the Detroit scene along with fellow garage rockers the MC5. The new album, admittedly, doesn't hold a candle to the holy trinity of the near-perfect first three Stooges recordings ("The Stooges," "Fun House" and "Raw Power"), but the live mix of new material and classic cuts garnered raves from snooty critics and adoring fans alike at their recent South by Southwest shows. Whether or not Iggy brings out his old tricks of self-mutiliation, food fetishism and genital exposure is really irrelevant--the man still performs with more raw intensity than any of his myriad 20-something imitators could hope to express. "The Rock Iguana" always hits the stage with reckless self-abandon, drawing himself and his audience so far into the power of his music that age becomes a non-issue. Watching Iggy perform is like getting a lesson in rock history--it is a brutal tour through the psychosis that spawned punk, leaving the audience to gape in wonder at the living legend on stage before them.
