Ola Onabule Monday, October 15 8 pm & 10:30 pm Admission: $10 @ table, $5 @ bar
Ola Onabule will be at the Blue Note Monday, Oct. 15 Vocalist Ola Onabule spent his formative years in Nigeria, West Africa. After participating in the music scene in London for some time, Ola released his first single "You'd Better Believe" in the summer of '94 to critical acclaim and strong radio support. OLA released his first album "More Soul Than Sense" to equally positive response in 1995. His recording career has since spawned a further five well received albums. "From Meaning Beyond Definition" (1997), "Precious Libations for Silent Gods" (1999), "Ambitions For Deeper Breadth" (2002) and "In Emergency Brake Silence" (2004). In the autumn of 2007, Ola will release his sixth studio album, "The Devoured Man." Ola has opened for and guested with artists such as Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, Diane Reeves, Al Jareau, Patti LaBelle, Tower of Power, Joe Zawinul and Roy Hargrove. His voice is described by The Voice magazine as "achingly beautiful and passionate in its every expression" and "a lived in, soul drenched, well-mastered instrument" by Blues and Soul Magazine.
Pyeng Threadgill Friday, October 19 12:30 am Admission: $8
Pyeng Threadgill performs Friday, Oct. 19 While she has certainly been embraced in the jazz world, vocalist Pyeng Threadgill categorizes her music as progressive pop, asserting that jazz was once considered popular music. "Of the Air" is the first collection of original work by the singer-composer, daughter of the famous jazz musician Henry Threadgill and choreographer Christina Jones. Threadgill received widespread critical acclaim for her 2004 debut album, "Sweet Home: The Songs of Robert Johnson." Ultimately, Pyeng's sound defies categorization. Her voice, perhaps best described as "a cross between Jill Scott and Cassandra Wilson by way of Nina Simone" (San Diego Union Tribune, 2004) coincidentally invokes her wish to tie together the old with the new. At times, listening feels like a Billie Holiday record, and the next moment you are transported into a smoky New York City hipster joint. Pyeng Threadgill is a name that's hard to forget and an artist who produces music for the ages.
Jennifer Hartswick - CD Release Show Saturday, October 20 12:30 am Admission: $8
Jennifer Hartswick releases her new album Saturday, Oct. 20 Jennifer Hartswick is one of the most refreshing new voices of the 21st century and demonstrates so with her new album, "True." A consummate performer, she thrills audiences as a vocalist, trumpeter, composer, lyricist and educator. She is equally at home singing soul, funk, pop and R&B, but her passion without question is jazz. At the age of 20, Jennifer was afforded the opportunity to join Trey Anastasio's new band, having already recorded on "Story of the Ghost" (Phish, 1998) and "One Man's Trash" (Trey Anastasio, 1998). In her seven years of touring, she has shared the stage and studio with such legends as Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews, The Rolling Stones and Herbie Hancock. After a 2003 release, Jennifer has gone back into the studio with some of her favorite musicians to record an album very true to her heart.
Christian Scott Monday, October 22 8 pm & 10:30 pm Admission: $15 @ table, $10 @ bar
Christian Scott plays Monday, Oct. 22 One of the brightest jazz stars to emerge in the last few years is trumpeter Christian Scott. He makes his Concord Jazz debut with "Rewind That." Instead of retreading bebop the way so-called young lions did in the early 1990s, Scott delivers a smart, grooved and plugged-in set of tunes (nine of the 11 tracks are originals) with his electric sextet. Steeped in the jazz tradition and intent on participating in the music's evolution, the New York-based Berklee College of Music grad is indeed a significant new voice poised to make an impact on the future of jazz.
Jeremiah Friday, October 26 12:30 am Admission: $10
Jeremiah appears at Blue Note Friday, Oct. 26 In an industry driven by ubiquitous and unjustifiable hype, Jeremiah needs none. His unique presence in the music industry has garnered praise from Billboard Magazine and awards from the NAACP, a Leontyne Price Vocal Arts award, and an Allen Deverian award. Jeremiah performs regularly on the jazz, gospel and operatic scene. His lyrics penetrate the heart like a much needed salve, expertly composed of an exacting truth, a rare beauty, and joyful exhortation. Jeremiah's talents have garnered the admiration of a variety of fellow musical artists; he has performed alongside Chuck Mangione, Yolanda Adams, George Michael, Michael Bolton, Amel Larrieux, Kayla Parker, Commissioned, Angelo and Veronica, Fred Hammond, Dorinda Clark-Cole and Darryl Coley. In addition to numerous performances, Jeremiah is also a vocal educator with a Bachelors of Music and Masters of Music. Performing with Jeremiah are Marvin Sewell (guitar), Keith Witty (upright bass), Chris Eddleton (drums) and Lindsay Orr (background vocals).
