One of rock's most original groups, The Fiery Furnaces, are playing a special free show this weekend at the scenic Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens. The always thought-provoking brother and sister duo of Matt and Eleanor Friedberger are set to release their sixth album, "Widow City" on October 9th.

Each of their previous releases have expanded on their restlessly inventive sound, challenging critics and fans alike to come to terms with their wild song structures, shifting tempos, and all-over-the-map instrumentation. With every new release by the Fiery Furnaces, you can expect something completely different from their last effort. The duo rose to prominence with their nearly through-composed second album, "Blueberry Boat," (2004) a wildly complex medley that confused critics almost as much as it delighted. Then, in 2005, they released "EP"--which really functioned more like a short LP--and rapidly followed up with "Rehearsing My Choir," a mostly spoken-word concept album featuring the Friedberger's grandmother, Olga Sarantos.

Following the mixed reception for "Rehearsing My Choir," 2006's "Bitter Tea" was the band's final release on Rough Trade records. Now, the Fiery Furnaces have signed to the esteemed Thrill Jockey, who should be more than excited to be releasing "Widow City"--which looks to feature some of the catchiest compositions the Furnaces have produced to date. Setting this album apart from their others is the heavy use of the Chamberlain, a tape-loop-triggering keyboard that provides most of the orchestration for the album.

Their August 26th show at the appropriately surreal Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria, Queens will preview tracks from "Widow City," but expect the arrangements to be heavily reworked from the album versions. The performance is part of the FLOAT exhibition--which is a series of temporary artworks installed and performed throughout the park on Saturdays and Sundays this summer. The free concert will be held rain or shine.

To get there by subway:
Take the N to the Broadway stop in Queens. Walk ten blocks down Broadway towards the Manhattan skyline and the East River. Broadway ends at Vernon Boulevard at the Socrates Sculpture Park.
