Only nine bands (including the Beatles) have charted more hits on Billboard's Hot 100 than The Grass Roots.
The Town Hall will present, on Friday April 20 at 8 pm, a special evening of two of 1960's top rock bands:  The Grass Roots ("Midnight Confessions," "Temptation Eyes" and "Two Divided by Love") with the Rock 'n Roll and Grammy Hall-of-Famers The Lovin' Spoonful ("Do You Believe in Magic", "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice") in a combined program. The concert will be both groups' only New York appearances.

In the history of Rock 'n Roll only nine bands (including the Beatles) have charted more hits on Billboard's Hot 100 than The Grass Roots. The Grass Roots were one of the most played bands on radio from 1966-1975. From their first hit, "Where Were You When I Needed You," in 1966 the Grass Roots had a string of 14 Top 40 hits that kept the band on the charts nearly every week. "Midnight Confessions," "Live For Today," "Sooner Or Later," and "Temptation Eyes" are still heard daily on classic hits stations nationwide. Between 1967 and 1972, The Grass Roots were on the Billboard charts for a record 307 straight weeks and sold over 20 million records worldwide. They also hold the all-time attendance record for a one act U.S. concert, of 600,000 people on July 4th, 1982 in Washington, DC.

The Grass Roots are Rob Grill, lead vocals, bass guitar, songwriter; Joe Dougherty, drums; Dusty Hanvey, lead guitar; Chris Merrell, lead guitar; Larry Nelson, keyboards.

Over a two year period in the mid-'60s The Lovin' Spoonful had a string of Top Forty hits, seven of which placed inside the Top Ten.
The Lovin' Spoonful combined their own folksy, country, good time sound with electric rock 'n roll to become one of the most popular New York-based bands in the golden age of '60s rock. The Spoonful, rather than trying to make a big political statement, celebrated the joy of relationships and everyday living. Over a two year period in the mid-'60s The Lovin' Spoonful had a string of Top Forty hits, seven of which placed inside the Top Ten, including the anthem for a hot July evening, "Summer in the City."

In addition to that they also wrote and performed two soundtrack albums for two film directors very early in their careers, for Woody Allen's "What's Up Tigerlily" and Francis Ford Coppola's "You're a Big Boy Now." They toured almost constantly during this period and were one of the first rock bands to perform on college campuses almost as much as for teenage concertgoers.

The Lovin' Spoonful features Joe Butler, lead vocals and drums; Steve Boone, guitar; Jerry Yester, guitar; Mike Arturi, drums; and Phil Smith, guitar.

Upcoming Town Hall presentations include, on March 26, Broadway by the Year:  The Broadway Musicals of 1938; on March 30, the Paco Pe a Flamenco Dance Company in the U.S. Premiere of A Compás; on April 7, Kristjan Järvi leads the Absolute Ensemble in the New York Premiere of Absolute Arabian Nights; on April 27, the East Village Opera Company; on April 30, Broadway by the Year:  The Broadway Musicals of 1959; on May 4, another classic group, The  5th  Dimension; on June 9, I Got Rhythm: Mickey and Judy's Hollywood: and on June 18, Broadway By the Year: The Broadway Musicals of 1964, Part II.
