Legendary Guitarist Dorado Schmitt will lead the Gypsy Stars in performance
On August 1st at 8 pm, Stratta/Philips Productions, Inc. will be celebrating gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt in their concert event "The Spirit of Django Reinhardt." His musical style, "Le Jazz Hot," was born in Paris in the '30s where Django teamed with famed jazz violinist Stephane Grappeli to create The Hot Club Quintette.

Born in Liberchies, Pont-à-Celles, Belgium, Reinhardt spent most of his youth in gypsy encampments close to Paris, playing banjo, guitar and violin from an early age professionally as Bal-musette halls in Paris.  Reinhardt is the idol of the fictional 1930's guitarist Emmet Ray (played by Sean Penn) in the Woody Allen film "Sweet and Lowdown" (1999).

This year's concert features The John Jorgenson Quintet, who has re-created Django's music for feature films such as "Gattica" and "Head in the Clouds." Jorgensen joins our regular 'gypsy stars' from France, legendary lead guitarist Dorado Schmitt, young lead and rhythm guitar  Samson Schmitt, virtuoso violinist Pierre Blanchard, and accordionist/accordina master Ludovic Beier, all back by popular demand.

Going into its 5th anniversary, 'The Spirit of Django Reinhardt' concert will again be held at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. This project renews the successful collaboration of producers, Pat Philips and Ettore Stratta, with Michel Roux, who presented over 50 major concert events in the late '80s and '90s.
