An incredibly creative multi-instrumentalist, Honda creates ever-shifting soundscapes using samplers, keyboards and computer software. Her style is difficult to define, but always appealing to fans of creative new music. Yuka moved to New York City in the 80s and jumped full force into the explosive creative scene, eventually finding herself onstage with the likes of Caetano Veloso and Brian Eno. Soon after she met Miho Hatori and formed their unique, groundbreaking band Cibo Matto. She inspired Kathleen Hanna to start making music in her bedroom which led to the formation of Le Tigre and she influenced Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) to use the DJ-70, a whimsical sampler made by Roland. After a volcanic rise to fame on the success of their two albums Viva La Woman! and Stereo Type A, Cibo Matto went into dormancy in 2001. Around that time, Yuka began playing at Tonic, experimenting with an ever- changing cast of musicians. Sometimes she played solo laptop shows; occasionally, she incorporated a vocal choir, or played bass as part of a progressive heavy metal band. Her rotating hyper-competent posse, which at times included such downtown luminaries as John Zorn and Jim O'Rourke, could do whatever she dreamt up. This performance marks the debut of a long-awaited collaboration with Petra Haden, the adventurous vocalist and violinist who has accompanied artists such as Foo Fighters, The Decemberists Green Day, Bette Midler, Sean Lennon and Victoria Williams.
