On February 20, 2003, a devastating fire -- among the worst nightclub fires in U.S. history -- took the lives of 100 hundred people. The youngest of these victims was Nicholas O'Neill, an 18-year old actor, musician and writer. Less than one year before the fire, O'Neill wrote his first and last play, inspired by an allegedly true story of angels appearing to a group of friends one night on Narragansett Beach in Rhode Island and also by the untimely death of a little girl named Grace. Remarkably, his angelic characters are young adults who have died tragically, and one of them is clearly meant to be Nicky himself. Husband and wife Ephraim and Miriam and best friends Yitz and the very pregnant Yael (also married) are preparing to observe the Yom Kippur holiday. Ephraim has never gotten over his feelings for Yael, who Yitz stole from him long ago -- a fact of which Miriam is all too aware. Yitz is also angry with Ephraim for not enlisting in the Israeli army as he himself has done, calling him a coward. These issues come even more quickly into focus as an air raid siren announces the beginning of war with Egypt and Syria.
