David Gurland does "Neurotica"

I first met the divine David Gurland more than a dozen years ago, at the now defunct O’Neill Cabaret Symposium in Waterford CT, when he was still a mere slip of a lad. That’s where performers used to come to learn what it takes to become part of the cabaret world from such master performers as Julie Wilson, Margaret Whiting and Karen Akers. At the time I remember being blown away by David’s sly sense of humor and his incredible voice.

Now an established Cabaret personality in his own right and winner of the art form’s highest awards--a MAC and three BISTRO Awards (more than any other Male Vocalist)--David has been performing a different show every third Sunday at the West Bank Café’s Laurie Beechman Theatre. Whether it’s show tunes or country, girl singers or boy, Madonna or Judy (Gurland does Garland to celebrate Gay Pride Month), he sings them all and he sings them extremely well indeed.

Recently, Timessquare.com caught David’s '70s and '80s “Boy Singer” show, where he rocked out with songs made famous by all the guys from The Bee Gees (“How Deep is Your Love?”) and Barry Manilow (“Take a Chance”) to David Bowie (“Major Tom”), The Eagles (“Wasted Time”) and Sting (“I’ll Be Watching You”). David’s multi-octave range allowed him to go from basso to falsetto while hitting every vocal stop in between. And of course his finale just had to be “YMCA”--what else?

Now check out David’s May 20th show. It’s an acoustic reprise of “Neurotica,” his not-to-be missed, award winning mini-rock Madonna homage. David’s mastery of Cabaret becomes more and more evident as he moves effortlessly moves from musical genre to musical genre. After Madonna, it’s the DGUR (as he calls himself) Gay Pride Garland fantasia as “Gurland Does Garland,” with guest star Mary Birdsong (“Reno 911”/Martin Short’s “Fame Becomes Me”).

And as if July won’t already be hot enough, on the 12th (a Thursday) comes his all Girl salute to the “Great Women Singers and Songwriters of the 1990s and 2000s”--everyone from Annie Lennox, Celine Dion, and Shawn Colvin to Kelly Clarkson, with special guest Julie Reyburn (Nightlife and MAC award winner).

Make your reservations now and join David’s ever-growing fan club.
