Cooler than Kill Bill, hotter than Shaft! The OBIE Award-winning Ma-Yi Theater Company teams up with the NYIT Award-winning Vampire Cowboys for Soul Samurai, the story of Dewdrop and her fight through the mean streets of post-apocalyptic Brooklyn. After avenging her lover's murder in the heart of Coney Island, Dewdrop now must make it back home to the L.E.S. before the shoguns of Kings County find her. In a play that mixes hip-hop culture, blaxploitation, and the martial arts, this production dials it back old school with a seventies-inspired samurai story. This is one slick slice with a sharp sword and a score to settle!

Founded in 1989, Ma-Yi Theater Company is an Obie Award-winning, not-for-profit 501(3)(c) organization whose primary mission is to develop new plays and performance works that essay Asian American experiences.
Ma-Yi  provides a home where artists can take big creative risks and investigate new avenues of collaboration as they hone individual and collective skills. They encourage artists to engage their communities in vigorous dialogues that push Asian American aesthetics beyond easily identifiable Orientalist markers. They challenge popular prescriptions of what culturally specific theater should be by producing challenging, forward-thinking plays written by today's emerging crop of new playwrights. ma-yitheatre.org
Vampire Cowboys is an award winning theatre company with a mission towards the creation and production of new works of theatre based in stage combat and dark comedy with a comic book aesthetic that explore challenging subject matters. Vampire Cowboys actively pursues the mating of different genres (Film noir, Teenage Comedies, Horror, Sci-Fi, etc.) and conventions (Musicals, Dance, Puppetry, etc.) to create an eclectic structure to tell its stories. The aim of the company is the presentation of plays that both embrace popular entertainment as well as resonate as pieces of art. This is a theatre that shamelessly uses spectacle and stage combat to explore topics such as child molestation, war, suicide, religion, and other themes usually reserved for “serious theatre”. It is our goal to appeal simultaneously to both the childish and the intellectual sides of our audiences by presenting work that marries both pop-culture and provocative ideas. vampirecowboys.com
