More women are taking the initiative to get annual checkups but they are falling short when it comes to eating healthy foods and exercising.
The Office of Women's Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is calling on women to make health their top priority during the 8th annual National Women's Health Week.
"Women in the U.S. are on track when it comes to visiting their health care providers regularly and getting important health screenings," says Dr. Wanda Jones, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health and Director of the Office on Women's Health. "But women also need to eat better and exercise more. National Women's Health Week is a great time for women to commit to becoming healthier."
The event encourages women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier and happier life. The theme for this year's health week is "It's Your Time: Pamper Your Mind, Body and Spirit." Throughout the week, families, communities, businesses, government, health organizations and other groups will work together to celebrate the progress in women's health.
The Office on Women's Health was established in 1991. OWH coordinates the efforts of all department agencies and offices involved in women's health. The office works to improve the health and well-being of women and girls in the United States through its programs, by educating health professionals, and motivating behavior change in consumers through the dissemination of health information.
They will also bring attention to and create understanding of women's health issues, encourage women to get regular check-ups, provide free or reduced screenings for women across the country, and educate women on steps they can take to improve their physical and mental health and prevent disease.
