ImageThis summer, take the Central Park Challenge and walk the 3k, run in a 5k or participate in a family fun day which includes a play area for the young ones.

The event is a fund raiser to provide care and services for adults and children with disabilities such as autism, mental retardation, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Without the support of donors, many of these people are unable to get the support they deserve in order to achieve the best opportunity to achieve, learn and flourish.

By participating in the Central Park Challenege, you are helping the disabled to acquire adaptive physical education equipment, specialized school nurses, computer equipment and premiere health care.

YAI (Young Adult Insititute) was founded in 1957 by a group of parent seeking opportunities for their children with developmental disabilities. At the time, the average American income was $2,992 a year, the cost of a loaf of bread was 14 cents and an individual with disabilities were either warehoused in institutions or at home with little opportunity to learn, work or be integrated with their communities.

Now, 50 years later, the YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilites Network serves all ages from infants through senior citizens, and in the process, benefits all of society.

Below is a video about the YAI/NIPD and the Central Park Challenge.
