Jennifer’s Body
Written by Kevin Filipski

Jennifers-BodyJennifer’s Body (Fox) – After Juno, everyone wanted to see if screenwriter Diablo Cody was a one-trick pony. Well, kind of: Jennifer’s Body, also set in high school, shows a bunch of teenage misfits who speak an unnatural hipster-nerd lingo. But unlike the sappily good-natured Juno, Jennifer’s Body is a farcical horror movie about a sexpot getting revenge on an indie band (whose members sacrificed her for fame) by killing males in the school. It’s a cleverly stupid idea in the extreme, which Cody and director Karyn Kusama know: they cast current uber-babe, Megan Fox, as the femme fatale. Fox can’t really act, but as Jennifer, she looks almost supernaturally gorgeous (even before her eerie transformation), which helps this uncertain mix of humor and horror through its many missteps. Amanda Seyfried, is appropriately mousey as Jennifer’s BFF, Needy; their teasing lesbian scene is shot as if it’s the movie’s high point, which it isn’t. Since there’s no clear point of view, Jennifer’s Body ends up in no-woman’s-land, but as a showcase for Fox’s assets, it’s certainly has its striking moments. The Blu-ray image is crisp and clean, with much of the darks and the muted colors translating well; extras include featurettes, interviews, commentaries by Kusama and Cody, and another tease—a one-minute recap of scenes entitled Megan Fox Is Hot. Well, duh.
