An early pioneer in the gentrification of TriBeCa, Walkers Restaurant and Bistro has become an area institution. Located on the corner of North Moore and Varick Streets, Walker's is oozing in charm! With its 19th century New York vibe, it attracts a most eclectic and eccentric clientele, from the local gentry and lawyers to celebrities, including Michael Keaton, Billy Crystal, Harvey Keitel, and regular, Ed Burns.
Hearty and delicious American fare with a twist is always available, along with an ever-changing nightly specials menu that swings from European, to Moroccan, to Asian.
"Our Specialties are My Specialties!" enthusiastically revealed Joe Barraco, Walker's innovative chef. "What's unique is that every day we have our separate specials menu that features two different pastas, a chicken and a meat dish." " We have a regular clientele here who dine here 2 – 3 times a week, so we like to offer something tantalizing for them. " Joe's inspirational cuisine takes you on a world tour!
I was in Joe's capable hands and since it was Friday, fish was the on the menu for the day.
He started me off with seared scallops, roast pepper salad with a fresh, zingy Chimichurri sauce (an Argentine salsa of olive oil, lime juice, parsley and basil). Absolutely mouth watering! Next arrived a subtly tanged "Cioppino", a stew of mussels, squid, shrimp, and fish in a spicy saffron/tomato broth ladled generously over couscous and topped with crostini which was tender, textured, and delightfully fresh. Originating from the wharves of San Francisco, Cioppino was derived from the Italian fisherman's catch of the day. I was hooked! My culinary experience was amazing...a delicate array of infused flavors each creating a gratifying and scintillating sensation. Well Done Joe!
With its generous portions, relaxed, classic New York ambience, and warm friendly service, Walker's is a must!

Now there is a splash of pink on the urban canvas of West Broadway, TriBeCa. This 1810 cottage has been transformed by the inventiveness
of Matt Abramcyk (Bunker Club, Smith and Mills, Warren 77)
with the theme of signature eclectic contemporary Americana. Where ever you look there is some form or shape that speaks its own tale, the wood from upstate farms masterly placed on the pitched ceilings, the original fireplace in the back room of smoky mirrors, to original end of the line wallpapers interlaced as borders and displayed on individual sections of the walls, tin plating of ole ceilings cleverly placed on the Bar Upstairs, to the white 19th century hand made tiles that Matthew imported from Holland, vintage iron cast tables and a mix of factory industrio chairs.
The "cuisine theme' is traditional American comfort food, all the S"s are on the menu: Soups (sweet potato and apple) absolutely delectable. Salads (4 selections). Sides and a combo of Salad and Sides. Chef, John Martinez, suggestion was - Turkey Burger with pickled beet, Swiss Chard, Blue Cheese, topped with a fried Egg). Hats off to the Chef!
The flavors were one compliment to another.
Treat yourself and pop into– Tiny,s and the Bar Upstairs.
