New Year's Eve Reflections Print E-mail
Every year, we make our resolutions minutes before the ball drops; why not start thinking about them now

New Year's eve begets reflections, retributions, and recriminations...at least for me.

I struggle to make meaning out of the whole previous year in the 24 hours before the ball drops.

Yes, I know I shouldn't wait. I should spend time each month in reflection--what can I do next month to make it better, to be better.

But I, like everyone else, wait until the week before... Hey, the day before, to question, to wonder, to reflect.

Of course then I feel behooved, no, make that more like panicked, to really work up all those thoughts, reflections and resolutions in a few short moments before the horns come out, the champagne is popped and the confetti bursts from the bags ready to drop as the ball--glittering in the night sky--makes its descent once the count begins.

Of course that's why I welcome covering the New Year's celebration in Times Square.

It's the ideal way to avoid facing my resolutions and reconciliations, my incomplete goals and failure to produce exponential change. And then I can make reflections that I am always ready to cope with--those last minute reactions that can be denied later because they were fashioned on the spur of the moment.

And since I am daunted by the task of making my "Year's Best and Year's Worst" lists, it's easier to wait until the end and cross-reference everyone else's lists.

Until I start remembering the year's events, the activities I witnessed or judged, it's easier to enjoy the amnesia of being in the moment.

That is, until this year...

We are starting now. Why not? What a way to be progressive and fashion-forward; it's a way to challenge the norms and project ahead.

So let's start devising those resolutions, plethoras of lists as they happen--and think of all the places we can go and who we want to be with.

Yes, this is TimesSquare.com's effort to consider preparing for New Year's Eve as early as possible.
