Glen Hansard's voice rang at Town Hall

Sometimes it seems that rock music either blasts your ears out or belongs on AM Radio, and the middle ground can be dangerous terrain for any musician who hopes to remain respectable. But Irish band The Frames proved their achingly beautiful sound could be as broad and bold as it can be still and quiet. Escaping the soft-rock traps of being either warbling or whiny, singer-songwriter Glen Hansard [read our interview] led his mates in a wave of sonic goodwill--and personal goodwill, too: fans scrambled, at Hansard's suggestion, to the criminally empty seats at the front of the house at its show at the venerable Town Hall. "Executives! Never here on time!" he joshed.

A New York band called Doveman performed as the extremely chill opening act, setting the scene for a far more melancholy night than what The Frames belted out, closing their own set with the Neil Young cover of "Only Love Will Break Your Heart." The musicians—including a characteristically muted trumpet—seemed in special tune with one another, though socked out in their own private reverie. The big, beating heart of the night however wasn't shoved in until Hansard and company took the stage.

Hansard, who stars in the indie musical-romance "Once"--the Audience Award-winner at Sundance --has a solid, plaintive voice that always manages to soar above the glorious noise of his fellow bandmates. U2 references seem inevitable with any such uplifting Irish band, but The Frames' lyrics and glorious pitch are strictly aimed at concerns more interpersonal than international. The five-piece outfit also has a particular secret weapon in violin player Colm mac con lomaire.

Relationships in estrangement seemed the key of the night, but the audience could hardly feel closer or more transported.
