Siren Music FestivalSaturday, July 21 - Starts at noon VillageVoice.com/siren
This free, all-day, all-ages, music festival will feature live international, national, local bands and DJs performing on two outdoor stages in historic Coney Island. Now in its seventh year, the Village Voice Siren Music Festival ™ has solidified its status as New York's leading free outdoor music festival, drawing over 100,000 music fans the past four years. Siren has established itself as a showcase for indie rock veterans as well as much-hyped emerging artists.
The Village Voice, the nation's largest alternative weekly newspaper, has put together a great line-up this year that should appeal to hipster types or anyone who appreciates great rock music.
Eclectic electro artist M.I.A., Saddle Creek indie rockers Cursive (headlining the second stage) and the good-time Brooklyn band White Rabbits were recently added to an already incredibly strong lineup.
The legendary New York Dolls headline the mainstage at 7:30--the rest of the bill is filled out by Voxtrot, We Are Scientists, The Black Lips, Dr. Dog, Noisettes, Lavender Diamond, The Detroit Cobras, Elvis Perkins, and The Twilight Sad.
Sets are staggered between the two stages at half hour intervals, so you can always check out the other stage if the current band isn't to your liking. But the huge crowds can make it hard to get close to the stage, so your best bet might be to pick a stage and arrive early.
To get to Coney Island, take the D, F, Q, or N train to Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue.
