 I recently had the pleasure and honor to meet with Hildegunn Gjedrem, who just released her long awaited new album, “Share your Secret.” She had her album release party in a downtown New York lounge that is known for their great live music. I had a chance to interview her and purchase my own copy of her album, not to mention the pleasurable experience of hearing her perform live.
Hildegunn is simply lovely, with a humble spirit and strong presence that shines through with every word that she speaks. She is tall and svelte, hovering over me by at least half a foot, even as we both sported four inch stilettos. She spoke about how her writing direction has changed quickly. Hilde didn’t know who she was musically for a while (her last album was in 2007) and was struggling to find her niche for the new album. Ever evolving as a person, a songwriter and an artist, she went with all fresh material for the album. Hildegunn describes her music style as an “artsier kind of pop, very warm and accessible”. It is indeed that and more. As I play one of her favorite tracks on the album, “Warrior”, you can feel the strength and vulnerability in her soft and sultry voice as she sings through what is obvious pain. She described “Warrior” and “Hunted” as two of her songs that were written while harnessing a lot of strength. Share your Secret was very emotional and an honest and vulnerable point for her as a songwriter. You can definitely tell this as she sings from her heart on each track. I love the melodic tone of “Merry Go Round” which I absolutely adored hearing live. The background vocals and tempo of the beat and harmonies is so catchy, you’ll find yourself humming it all day long. Listening to Hilde live is a true experience within itself, so I suggest that you put attending one of her live shows on your to do list. If you’re not familiar with her work, then I certainly recommend that you check her new album available everywhere, including itunes. Her official Warrior Song video is attached below.
