Lights, action and stores!

New York, the city that never sleeps, always has something going on and every major store to serve that interest. When a person comes to Times Square to see it, in order to believe it, they can also purchase something to prove they were there.

One of the myriad souvenir shops in New York's Times Square--some shops offer I (heart) NY tees for only two dollars!
Part of the fun of shopping in Times Square is seeing your favorite stores in a new context, one vastly different from the suburban mall experience. Whether these emporiums have flashing lights and crazy floor plans, shopping in Times Square is something uniquely New York.

From such stores as the whiz-bang Toys 'R Us to the scrumptuous Dale & Thomas Popcorn, shoppers of all kinds can find the memorable experience to suit them. From its once-tawdry past (which, for the nostalgically inclined, can still be found nearby), the area has been transformed into the ultimate consumer's paradise--one so glittery and gussied up that it's almost surreal.

And besides all the themed and highfalutin branded stores, there is still that vast array of cheesy souvenir shops within this 10-block area. Every few steps throughout Times Square, you'll encounter a myriad of stores with every silly NYC object, from snow globes of the Statue of Liberty to FDNY caps; these stores carry a mostly identical stock of every possible New York trinket--so if you can't find it in one spot you can always find it elsewhere.

And don't forget the dozens of street vendors, crowded along the Avenues, and down 42nd Street, selling stomach-toughening foodstuffs like kebobs or knishes and offering everything from cell-phone accessories to kitschy Americana. That's Times Square for you--and the rest of the world.

Walking through Times Square people can Dale and Thomas Popcorn (previously called "Popcorn Indiana") and shout "World's best popcorn!" Though stepping into the store doesn't quite transport a person into an Indiana corn field, we get the next best thing from all that maize--fresh aromatic popcorn in all the flavors whether sweet or salty.

Dale and Thomas created a company that pops the freshest and most plump kernels. This popcorn had added to it the most mouth-watering toppings such as caramel, popuccino, cheddar, peanut butter, chocolate and much more. A favorite flavor is popcorn with peanut butter and white chocolate drizzled over it. The price depends on the quantity and style of topping but it's reasonable and worth it. Dale and Thomas Popcorn will satisfy any kind of popcorn craving.

The bright yellow MTV logo on top the Paramount building in the middle of Times Square proclaims that you are at the center of the pop music world--or, that you are by the headquarters of the cable channel once known as "The Music Television Network."  Though the main MTV channel broadcasts more reality TV shows than music nowadays, it is still based at Times Square, where people gather daily to gawk at, or join, the lines heading into the building to become the audience for "TRL" ("Total Request Live"), one of MTV's top shows,

Now, at the base of the building is MTV's gift shop, which draws a endless flow of customers who purchase MTV souvenirs. From branded T-shirts to small tote bags to scooter radios, the store offers ever imaginable product that can carry an MTV logo. And it sits just below the studio from which "TRL" is broadcast to a gaggle of screaming girls and curious tourists. They also sell books on current bands and hot TV shows such "The Real World"--MTV's ground-breaking reality show. If you are hungry and want the ultimate customer experience, then you can buy an "Eat MTV" --the officially sanctioned packaged fizzy pops and jawbreakers. Surfer's paradise: The Quiksilver store on the corner of 42nd Street and Broadway
Whether your preferred board is for the waves, the slopes, or the sidewalk, this is the store for you. Every generation of boarder and all the styles they represent can be found here--not in Malibu or Santa Monica--but at the corner of Broadway and 42nd Street.

Quiksilver's signature use of rich visuals with bright colors infuses the urban surroundings of this boutique with imagery depicting the passion and adventure of the boardriding lifestyle. The store is like no other in New York City, offering full lines of Quiksilver and Roxy brands--though there is another one downtown (at 519 Broadway between Spring & Broome Sts. in Soho, 212-226-1193). This is an excellent stop for clothing, accessories, and footwear for "young-minded people."

Sanrio

It's cute, it's pink... it's the Sanrio store!
It's hard not notice the bright pink store walking down the re-conceptualized 42nd Street--once home to hardcore movie houses, pimps and thugs. But there it is; the window display is filled with pretty pink Hello Kitty items, and the rest of store is a haven for what they call "kawaii" culture in Japan. That's cute for those who don't know Japanese.

Actually the store is called Sanrio for the company that owns the Hello Kitty characters and images. But in bringing the popular cast of Hello Kitty characters to life for many little girl, it is forever known as the store for those almost ubiquitous characters. The store is a Hello Kitty collectors' dream because they sell it all-- Hello Kitty watches, clothing, stationery, and electronics but Sanrio has many more characters, and the store will carry all that stuff too.

The Toys 'R Us in Times Square has a full-size neon ferris wheel right inside the entrance
Whether you are a little kid or one who wants to find their inner child, this Toys "R" Us makes every kid feel like they're living in a huge fantasy toy world. The store has several floors filled with stuffed animals, games, dolls, videos and everything else that a child will swoon for. But someone coming to this store doesn't need to buy toys it's just enough to experience the fun of just being in the store.

For all those girls who love playing with Barbie, they will be ecstatic to see the giant Barbie area. But the most amazing thing at the Toys "R" Us in Times Square is the indoor 60-feet-high ferris wheel. Each car on the wheel relates to a toy from Barbie, "Toy Story" (the movie), Sesame Street or other favorites. There's also such attractions as the giant T-Rex from "Jurassic Park" (for those brave enough to handle the roaring) and the Candy Land area for those who have a sweet tooth. This is a great place for the whole family.

The Virgin Megastore

Virgin has two Megastores in NYC--one in Times Square and another downtown in Union Square. The Times Square location, however, has a full-fledged Loews Theater inside
Between 45th and 46th streets lies Manhattan's largest multimedia center with everything from music, DVDs, books, and  even related clothing to a cafe as well as a movie theatre inside. [It may not be bigger than all the J&R stores on Park Place downtown but for one store, the Mega store's square footage makes it larger than anyone J&R] To live up to its boast of "world's largest entertainment store," the Mega store also has occasional events from signings to actual music performances.

And if somehow you can't find something to buy amongst everything there from the latest pop music offerings to offbeat eclectic European titles, then at least you can watch and listen for free to the store's more than 600 listening posts and 100 video viewing stations. Hell, just watching the bizarre mix of the crowds drifting into store from Euro-chic to punk-flash makes for an entertaining experience.
