Suzana Stankovic is a New York City-based actress/dancer/choreographer who embodies the independent live-your-dreams spirit of New York City. Her original dance-theater shows have been praised by critics and audiences of all backgrounds. Here's how NY shaped her and her new show, PREDESTINED, which is being reprised on June 18th and 19th, 2010:
1. Where are you from originally? Astoria, Queens. I've lived in Astoria and Manhattan my whole life. My parents are Serbian (former Yugoslavia) so I'm a New Yorker with an Eastern European background.
2. What do you love about NYC? I love the energy and unlimited possibility and freedom to be who you want. Life is fleeting and precious. To be free to be yourself and to feel that you're in a place where anything is possible, is so inspiring. NYC is a unique and exciting place in this sense and I'm extremely grateful that I live here. I also love that NYC is tough. It tests and challenges you which forces you to find your strength. I also love the arts scene. NYC is home to so many amazing artists both renowned and unknown.
3. You say that your new dance-theater show PREDESTINED is inspired by your life in NYC. How so? My new show is daring and edgy. It celebrates self-determination and a fearless approach to living. All of these were inspired by my life in NY as an independent dance-theater artist. My goal is to disarm and inspire audiences from all walks of life; to touch our common humanity. NYC is a cultural melting pot and it's crowded and fast-paced yet we're all here living peacefully believing NY can fulfill our dreams. It's beautiful. In my new show, I cast light on this...the universal birthright to awaken to one's unique potential and identity in a world that primarily values conformity and adherence. If you're a seeker or non-conformist like I am, then NYC is for you. What's funny is that in the midst of the deep existential themes of my new show, there's a 'Sneaky Urban Pervert' character in the comedic portion, the kind who flashes women in public places. He was inspired by my real life experiences as a young woman in NYC. Can't pursue your dreams in NY without being flashed by a pervert now and then!
