While the Goth look has been popular since the 1980s, the popularity of Japanese Anime and Manga gave it an extra boost. What’s the Gothic Lolita look, you ask? Think Strawberry Shortcake meets Edward Scissorhands. The thick, glossy magazine called The Gothic Lolita Bible was first published in Japan during the 1990s and started a fashion trend that is still going strong to this day. This is not your ordinary fashion magazine: it is a guide to an elegant lifestyle. Every issue contains the latest looks from renowned Japanese designers such as Atelier Boz, Metamorphose, Angelic Pretty, and Baby The Stars Shine Bright. Highlights of the magazine include the World Snap pages, featuring snap-shots of Goths from around the world in their best gear, along with clothing pattern guides so you can make your own Gothic Lolita accessories. I admit, I love the look and I’m a fan of the magazine. Like most Americans, I have to get imported copies from specialty stores. I don’t understand Japanese at all, but so what? The magazines are so lovely, it's worth it. The Los Angeles-based graphic novel publisher TOKYOPOP seized the opportunity of the trend by publishing The Gothic Lolita Bible in English. The American edition of the magazine includes translated content from Japan, along with American articles. Editors Jenna Wittenberg and Michelle Nguyen graced the TOKYOPOP booth at this spring's New York ComicCon. They were decked out in Gothic Lolita attire as they welcomed fans. New York ComicCon attendees were treated to a fashion show (check out our video) that showcased the latest North American Elegant Gothic Lolita attire. Designers La Dauphine, In The Starlight, Blasphemina's Closet, and Megan Maude displayed their latest creations on the runway. Yes, the Gothic Lolita trend has become a worldwide phenomenon!
