“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.”-Rachel Carson Even with the urban life many of us lead, there are many ways to contemplate the earth. Staring at the horizon, reading photography books, and experiential, observational, or manual experiences such as gardening or brush clearing can help us feel centered. Carson's "beauty of the earth" can also include the view of the skyline from the roof of your building as well as the lush fullness of urban greenery after a good rain. In a pinch, nature shows on television can also add to our reserve of strength. Relaxation and Exercise Summer is a time for serious play, time off and deep relaxation. We use the summertime to rebuild our reserves for the rest of the busy year. In our work-crazed society we can lose sight of the benefits of just slowing down and taking time to rest, to hear ourselves think, to feel connected in our bodies and to be more present in our days. One of the simplest and most effective ways to feel better instantly is to turn some attention to the body; whether it is through relaxation or movement. Summer offers a unique time in which we can do both our relaxing and our movement in nature, outside in the sun. One of the greatest places to be in the summertime is near the water. Indeed, what would summer be without it? There is something magical and restorative in water, no matter the amount, and we naturally crave to be near it, by it or in it. Heading towards water can be both relaxing and rejuvenating.Just as much as the body loves to relax, the body loves to move. Another great prescription for healing is to get up, get out and get your body moving through exercise. Even though we feel our body is most healthy when it is getting appropriate physical activity, we often feel dread and boredom flood our system when we hear the word exercise. Think for a moment of what type of movement or exercise you would consider fun, as opposed to torture. Perhaps you loathe the idea of a gym, but miss taking dance classes. Maybe you secretly want to try yoga, rollerblading or take up walking with your neighbor in the mornings. There is always the option of playing touch football with your kids, taking up an old sport you haven't done in a long time or going for a swim. The summer offers even more choices, since you can do your exercising in the outdoors and sun. The choices are endless- it's simply up to you to choose what style of movement will excite you. Your heart will thank you, your soul will be gratified, your limbs will be more fluid and you'll sleep better at night. |
